The evolution of city life

Zuidas: new urban district

Valley embodies the major transformation being undertaken by the Zuidas district in Amsterdam. Originally a business district, Zuidas has developed into a lively, multifunctional environment that forms an integral part of Amsterdam. Valley is in perfect keeping with this transformation, as it offers the perfect living, working and recreation space. We call this ‘the evolution of city life’. Valley was designed by award-winning architect Winy Maas from the MVRDV architectural firm.

Unique public landscape

A unique public landscape is found throughout and across the entire building, designed by internationally renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf, featuring an impressive green valley, majestic stairs and sunny terraces that are accessible to all, and from where you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and surroundings. This remarkable concept is a unique addition to the Zuidas skyline. At the same time, Valley guarantees unprecedented quality of life in keeping with high Dutch standards.

Living, working & recreation

Valley represents a turning point in the development of Zuidas in Amsterdam on several levels. To begin with, various functions are combined in the complex: residences, businesses, restaurants, shops and cultural facilities. As a result, the area will also be ‘inhabited’ outside of office hours. Secondly, Valley is fully interwoven with the public areas. The landscaping serves as a connecting factor: the greenery on the street level continues uninterrupted to the various terraces of the building, creating an inviting and thriving connected landscape. A series of terraces invite a variety of uses. There are closed areas and more open views on Valley and the surroundings. The variety of plants is diverse, with varying leaf colours, shapes and inflorescence. A number of the blooming low-growth trees and shrubs punctuate the otherwise open and spatial structure.

Colour palette reminiscent of a mountainous region

In designing the public areas, a green colour composition was chosen. This ‘gradient’ offers visitors and residents a varied landscape and refers to the colour palette one typically finds in the mountains. The landscape is dominated by a number of large wooden seating areas with multi-stem trees.
