OVG Real Estate and Deloitte open “The Edge”

World's most sustainable office building

OVG Real Estate and Deloitte open “The Edge”

At the invitation of Coen van Oostrom (CEO, OVG Real Estate) and Peter Bommel (CEO, Deloitte Nederland) and attended by Frans van Houten (CEO, Philips), Joop Wijn (Member of the Supervisory Board, ABN AMRO), Mark Hawkins (CFO, Salesforce) and Daan Roosegaarde (Studio Roosegaarde), Matthijs van Nieuwkerk led a debate about the future of sustainable construction, innovation, digital entrepreneurship, partnership and technology.

Gavin Dunn (Director, BREEAM) of Building Research Establishment (BRE) made a spectacular presentation of the official BREEAM certificate. A drone carrying the certificate flew through the impressive atrium to the podium. This was the official opening as well as BRE’s way of confirming once again that The Edge is currently the world’s most sustainable office building according to the BREEAM certification system.

The Edge, the newest office building in the Zuidas business district in Amsterdam, is officially open. Deloitte and OVG Real Estate held this two-day event with a focus on digital entrepreneurship. Guests could see for themselves why The Edge is a global benchmark when it comes to sustainability and the use of smart technology in real estate development.

OVG Real Estate handed over the building to its principle occupier, Deloitte, at the end of 2014. Today, The Edge is entirely leased, also accommodating AKD, Salesforce, Henkel, Sandvik and Edelman. BRE, the global assessor of sustainable buildings, awarded the building its highest score ever for a new office building. Sustainable innovations such as the ‘connected lighting system’ developed by Philips that monitors and responds to daylight, movement and temperature; the solar panels on the facade; and also the design for the building and its materials make the building extremely efficient.

The Edge is characterised not only by its sustainability but also by its high degree of intelligence due to the innovations and technology built into it. All employees, for example, can regulate the temperature and light over their individual workplaces by means of an app on their smartphone, and the building’s facility managers then use this information to regulate the temperature in all the various rooms and to organise cleaning activities.

"Besides being an impressive building to work in, the ultra-modern technologies and the data they collect are providing interesting insights for our customers"

Peter Bommel, CEO van Deloitte

Coen van Oostrom, CEO of OVG Real Estate and developer of the building: “We are extremely proud that The Edge is such a pioneer in contemporary real estate development. This building demonstrates what the future of real estate development can look like when sustainability and innovation have to be the main focus.”

The parties involved

The Edge is the result of a close partnership between OVG Real Estate and Deloitte, the building’s principle occupier. The Edge was designed by Ron Bakker and Lee Polisano of PLP Architecture in London and is owned by Deka Immobilien Investment. The building also accommodates AKD, Salesforce, Henkel, Sandvik and Edelman.
