HENN wins architectural competition for future-oriented office building in the HafenCity

  • Smart “Multi-tenant office building” of the next generation with brand new use concept
  • Five internationally renowned architectural firms competed
  • Winning design creates a “top address” in the Quartier Elbbrücken that makes a concise urban architectural statement

On a 4,200 sqm plot (construction plot 110) in the Quartier Elbbrücken of the Hamburg HafenCity, OVG Real Estate is developing for completion by 2020, “The Pier”, a smart and energy efficient multi-tenant office building for the next generation with some 25,000 sqm BGF. In close cooperation with HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, OVG made its task that of imagining a future oriented office concept which extends the development dynamic and innovative power of the eastern HafenCity. At the central Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz in the Quartier Elbbrücken, “The Pier” will be erected as a technologically innovative building with a unique flexible space structure for modular leasing and with interfaces to public space. Building construction is to begin in 2018.

The architectural competition tendered for “The Pier” by OVG Real Estate with the agreement of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as well as HafenCity Hamburg GmbH was conducted in a weeklong workshop proceeding with five internationally renowned architectural firms. The architects HENN (Munich/Berlin) were declared unanimously the winner. This design impressed the jury especially because of its spiral-formed walk from the entry level to the rooftop which underlines architecturally the intended public character of the building. Also the successful implementation of OVG’s new smart workplace concept with well-structured office areas, common areas and hybrid zones as well as the fundamental considerations for the modular construction principal were emphasised by the jury.

Benthem Crouwel (Düsseldorf/Amsterdam) won second place in the competition. The Snøhetta (Oslo) firm was distinguished for its particularly sustainable contribution.

Other competitors were 3xn architects (Copenhagen) and Störmer Murphy and Partners (Hamburg).

All competitive submissions are on exhibit from 8 September in the HafenCity InfoCenter im Kesselhaus, Am Sandtorkai 30, 20457 Hamburg.

Martin Rodeck, managing director of OVG Real Estate in Germany, thanked the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and HafenCity Hamburg GmbH for the cooperation with this innovative competition proposed by OVG and exhibited complete satisfaction with the competition’s results: “It was no easy task that the competitors were given in the context of an intensive workshop. The designs not only had to satisfy OVG’s high demands for sustainability and innovation, but they also had to correspond with the principle of our new use concept for office buildings – with flexible spaces for business, co-working and common areas as well as public spaces. The architects at HENN accomplished this in an outstanding manner while also submitting an architectonic design wholly appropriate to this concept and the high-profile location of the project.”

Also Prof. Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg, presiding member of the management of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, gave his high praise: “The project ‘The Pier’, with its experimental, technologically demanding and innovative building concept fits perfectly in the Quartier Elbbrücken and will represent its innovative energy very well. HENN Architekten have managed to stage this complex use concept in an exciting way with their architectural design and give the design a striking character that emphasises the technical expression of the new working world.”
